I was employed for nearly 11 years as a public assistance worker for the government. I had begun considering working in other areas within the agency as I had reached the pay ceiling in my job category. It seemed that every position of interest required that I have at least a Bachelor’s degree irrespective of my experience. I returned to school and completed my Bachelor’s in a couple of years or so only to find that job offers for the positions I had been considering had become extinct. I contacted a friend from school who shared with me that she had been hired by a private agency and was being trained to become a social worker. She mentioned that the agency would assist with licensing and that they would also pay tuition for grad school should I desire to return to school for my Master’s. Long story short, I applied, was hired and began the training process. Things went down hill quite rapidly and I was jobless less than a year later. I had no desire to return to my previous employer and I felt confident that I would find suitable employment within a short period of time. Months later I was still unemployed with no job prospects. I submitted numerous resumes and registered with multiple job agencies. Still nothing was materializing. I was receiving just enough unemployment benefits to keep my head above water where my financial obligations were concerned. After several months I found myself in a rut and realized that I had no definite plans for my future. In short I was perplexed.
I had been corresponding with Pastor Guerrero about a speaking engagement at my church and in one of his messages to me he indicated that he was a life coach. I had never heard the term before and being curious I sent a message inquiring about what a life coach does. He returned the following message:
As a life Coach I help people discover their purpose and fulfill their dreams. People may be stuck in an area in their lives and need to find away to move forward or perhaps find life and work not to be fulfilling and need to discover what it is they need to do to find life etc.,more rewarding. I professionally guide them through a process where they can get unstuck and move in the direction they need to go and finally reach their fullest potential as God plans for their lives.
Instinctively I knew that this was what I needed. I quickly sent him a message asking him if he would consider being my life coach. He agreed and so began the journey. After completing a number of assessments I had to honestly admit to myself that I was not the person I professed I was in some areas of my life. These revelations were not pleasant but they were the medication I had to take if I expected to move forward. Pastor Guerrero wore many hats that I was not aware of and during our coaching sessions he would ask my permission to switch them periodically to address certain concerns. I appreciated his frankness, openness, his compassion, godly counsel, and his prayers in my behalf. While discussing one of my assessments it became apparent that I had a bent towards caring for people and the medical profession. I remembered that I had made a promise to the Lord that if He ever opened the door for me to return to school and become a physician (a life long dream of mine) I would. In between coaching sessions the Lord took me through a process of opening and closing doors to get me accepted at a Naturopathic School (someone unknown to me took care of my application fee), He also provided a place for me to live while attending pre-requisite classes at the school, and blessed me with additional income in the form of early retirement from my government job so that I could meet all my financial obligations.
When I began this journey I had no clue where it would lead. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I will be completing my final exam for my last pre-requisite course and will begin my course of study to become a Naturopathic physician on September 4, 2012.
To anyone and everyone who is willing to objectively face themselves in the light of godly counsel, God has a plan for your life, and under the Spirit’s influence you too may surmount any barrier that may be hindering or preventing you from achieving God’s plan for your life.
